The Islamic Art and Material Culture Subject Specialist Network (IAMC SSN) is delighted to be hosting its next study day at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, on Wednesday 1st April. The study day will explore calligraphy in Islamic Art and Material Culture and will include presentations from Dr Nur Sobers-Khan, Lead Curator, South Asian Collections at the British Library and Daniel Lowe, Curator, Arabic Collections at the British Library. In addition, participants from the IAMC SSN’s Calligraphy Specialist Support Scheme will share the latest findings and outcomes of their work. There will also be an opportunity to visit the ‘Precious and Rare: Islamic Metalwork from The Courtauld’ exhibition.

The study day will incorporate informal, interactive learning opportunities with practical elements aimed at building the knowledge and confidence of the attendees.

The SSN for Islamic Art and Material Culture aims to help museums unlock their collections by sharing expertise on objects and engagement in this specialist area. We particularly welcome museum professionals from regional museums, who are keen to develop a basic understanding of calligraphy.

Please note that as places are limited, we are offering them on a first come first served basis, with preference given to those working in UK museums.

Apply to our Bursary Scheme to help fund your attendance at the study day
The Islamic Art and Material Culture SSN is pleased to launch its bursary scheme to support attendance at its forthcoming study day exploring calligraphy in Islamic Art and Material culture, to be held on Wednesday 1st April, 2020 at Cartwright Hall, Bradford. We welcome applications for the bursary to cover standard travel and accommodation from those working in a professional capacity with Islamic Art and Material Culture collections in UK museums.

To apply for a bursary please email a copy of your CV and a short statement (no more than 500 words) on the importance of attending the study day in relationship to the Islamic Art and Material Culture collections at your institution. Please include a breakdown of costs for attendance, travel and accommodation.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Monday 23rd March. Please email applications to islamicartnetwork@gmail.com

This scheme is open to museum professionals working in home nation museums and aims to help them develop understanding and expertise on collections of Islamic art and material culture that could be used at their home institutions. We ask all successful applicants to write a short report for the SSN blog on how the bursary has helped their professional development.
